STE. GENEVIEVE – The next presentation in the Sainte Genevieve Museum Learning Center’s speaker series on Wednesday, May 10 will feature Ste. Genevieve historians Bob Mueller and Jim Baker. Their program, sponsored by Donze Construction Inc., is entitled, Architectural Ghost Tour of Downtown Ste. Genevieve.
They won’t be talking about spirits, but will focus on homes and buildings that have been lost to time and the people who once lived and worked in them.
Can you identify this lost building?
Mueller said discovering the history of a building can be like a puzzle.
“A lot of times a photograph will turn up and it will give little tidbits of history,” he said. “When we discover enough of these pieces, we can put a more complete spin on what downtown Ste. Genevieve used to look like. Sometimes it’s a mystery hunt and that’s what research is all about.”
Baker said they’ve come up with some really intriguing things.
“A lot of very interesting buildings were built after 1832 and every once in a while, we find something that we did not know existed,” he said. “That’s really the treasure hunt of the whole thing. It’s fascinating, and you just feel like you need to know more. Old photographs are a real slice of life.”
Do you know this home? It’s just one with a fascinating history that no longer exists.
Mueller and Baker’s presentation will be held Wednesday, May 10 at 7 p.m. All programs in the lecture series are free to museum members, otherwise, museum admission will apply.
